Today’s Vanity Presses Were Yesterday’s Major Publishers!

Once upon a time, in a land far, far away, writers wrote, and publishers printed, distributed, and actually marketed books…

But then something dramatic changed. Publishers started gobbling each other up, reducing their number, but accentuating their need to show regular, quarterly profits.

This was difficult in light of the fact that they didn’t publish books and sell them into retail stores. Unknown to most folks, publishers consigned their books, meaning, if they didn’t sell quickly, they could be returned to publishers, by retailers for full credit.

Publishers needed a new business model that shifted responsibility for selling away from them. Stores were spoiled, and they wouldn’t change their book acquisition deals.

So the only other logical place to look for a guaranteed sale was to authors, themselves. And there was an actual literary precedent for accomplishing this:

Tom Sawyer got his buds to PAY for the privilege of whitewashing Auntie’s fence! Now, authors are expected to PAY publishers by promoting and selling their own books.

Isn’t this one of the biggest, boldest reverse-delegation ploys you’ve ever seen?

I have been tracking an online discussion planted by a functionary at a large publishing company. In it, the person “seeds” the discussion with a question regarding the role of writers in promoting their own books.

“Should they do it?” is the basic question.

“Of course!” the replies concur, with nary an exception.

This is just big publishing mystification, as far as I’m concerned.

Let’s look back a number of years, when a very large publishing company asked me if I wanted to write a book.

I replied, “I have TWO that I’m ready to write!”

My editor was so pleased with my titles that he contracted with me for six titles in five years, four of which went on to become best-sellers.

No pressure was put on me to purchase my own titles, though I did buy some to sell at my seminars; quite profitably I might add.

Today, one of the fundamental, up-front questions you’ll hear from publishers is: “How many books are YOU going to buy?”

This is a huge shifting of responsibilities, from publishers to authors.

Authors are now looked to in order to assure a breakeven or profitability. Publishers have become printers-primarily, divesting themselves of responsibility to market and promote, vigorously.

Like some lenders that will spot you any amount, providing you don’t really need the money, publishers will sidle up to you, if you’re paying their way.
